Renting a self storage unit is a great way to create extra space. Whether you’re moving home, downsizing, or in the process of renovating, a self storage unit can be a fantastic halfway house. But if you want to maximise the space in your storage unit, there are a few simple things you can do to get ahead of the game.

Packaging Quality
Packaging is vital to ensure that everything is not just transported to the storage unit but stays secure. There are a few essential items that can make a massive difference here. In addition to cardboard boxes, you need to ensure that everything is sealed properly with tape. You should also consider bubble wrapping delicate items in cardboard boxes, sealing clothes in vacuum bags, as well as using storage blankets and furniture covers for large items like couches. And a spare box is always handy, especially if you need to store small items you may have missed in the packing process.
When packing each item have a marker pen to hand, so each item is clearly annotated which makes it easier when you come to move everything out. It’s a good idea to purchase packaging that will survive the moving process and, eventually, out of the storage unit.
Preparing Right
This will ensure that everything is going to survive the self storage journey. Firstly, consider the cleanliness of your items. Treat any leather with conditioner and ensure that appliances and upholstery are wiped down and vacuumed. Any motorised equipment that goes into storage should be drained of fuel.
When it comes to arranging where everything goes, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and map out your unit, either on a piece of paper or by using an IT tool, so everything can slot in like a well-placed jigsaw.
You should also consider maximising the space for ease of access. If you are putting items into storage that you need to access regularly, make sure they are near the front of the unit and shelving or racking can maximise the space as items can be stored upwards.
Smart Packing
Box up as much as you can without overfilling them, because if it’s too heavy items could fall through. Delicate items such as TV screens, picture frames and mirrors are best boxed up with protective covers or bubble wrap. Wrap other delicate items such as crockery and glassware with tissue or clean newspaper.
Label as much as possible and organise similar items in the same boxes, such as pots and pans or electronic items. This can make retrieving them easier later on. When labelling every box, it’s important to write on the top and the sides and note that anything marked as ‘fragile’ should be clear as crystal.
Furniture such as tables and sofas can stack better in the self storage unit if you can remove the legs, but ensure you keep all of the loose items together in a clearly labelled bag.
Moving Day
Moving day can be a stressful process, but for the transition from the moving van to the unit to go smoothly. Begin by loading the back of the unit and placing heavier items on the floor, the lighter items should always be on the top.
When stacking items, think about any need to access them whilst being stored. When loading the units, pack small items or boxes inside any available space of larger items, for example inside wardrobes or cabinets.
Sit Back and Relax
For extra ease, ensure you’ve a full list of all of the items ready for when you need them. Finally, you can sit back and relax, knowing your valuables are safe and secure in your self storage unit.😎
